The Darkest Minds #1 of the Darkest Minds Trilogy by Alexandra Bracken (No Spoilers) Review

When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something alarming enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that gets her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that’s killed most of America’s children, but she and the others have emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they cannot control.

Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones.

When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. Now she’s on the run, desperate to find the one safe haven left for kids like her—East River. She joins a group of kids who escaped their own camp. Liam, their brave leader, is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can’t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents.

When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all its mysterious leader. But there are other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at a life worth living. (Synopsis from Goodreads)

Review
Goodreads rating: 4 stars. Original Rating: 3.5 stars

When Alexandra Bracken was writing this book, I bet she made a list of all the elements she wanted to add to the book. Intrigue, check. Comedy, check. Romance, check. Bad boy young villain, check. Crazy super powers, check.
This book had all the elements one likes in a good YA dystopian book. But the only problem was, they were not in the right proportions or amount. From where Ruby, a powerful protagonist who starts as a girl in distress and fear of her own self and powers and ends up still better than what she was, starts in the book. She doesn't end there.  In fact, she gets raggled up so many times that its rather confusing what actually IS happening in the book. But eventually, when the poetic randomness of this book is done, you start grasping the storyline. And then the story becomes interesting and gripping. A complete page turner.
Ruby is one of the most powerful kids that remained after a deadly plague wiped out all the kids of of USA. The ones who remained were darted off as freaks. And true to the word, they were more-or-less tortured. They were split into groups of colours. Greens were the calm ones who still had a LIFE. Blues were telekinetic. Yellows controlled electricity, and Oranges had crazy mind powers.
And Ruby was one. She could access a person's thought by physical touch. But she concealed until one day the White Noise, a sound made to capture all hidden Oranges, busted her to a woman working for an organisation that helps children to get out of the prisons there. Ruby was hiding as a Green.
She is presented with a choice that leads her to meet the handsome Liam, a Blue who has a weird past of his own.
The only thing was, I couldn't connect to the characters as much as everyone claims this book makes you connect. I did not.

Or maybe just that this book and the characters had been hyped for me enough already? I wanted to fell the way they felt, but i just couldn't get those emotions in line.

The story kept me guessing and what was happening still felt real because thats just how Alexandra wrote it. She wrote it to make us believe, And that is not something a lot of authors can achieve.

My favourite part of the book was definitely the concluding fight. Its had the right amount of everything. And a good villain in a book is always a charmer.
Sad scenes were the ones that were written with complete finesse.

And the Awards..*Drumroll*

Best side kick:  Suzame or Zu.
Why? She is a bundle of cuteness and crazy ass kicker when it comes down to it. She is unafraid and measured at the little age of ten. And also the best written character in this book.

Best negative role: Clancy Gray.
Why? What do I say? I have a soft spot for bad boys, and Clancy maintained that demeanour. I loved him.

Best character: Liam
Why? He's a little weird and very easy to understand. He knows how to conceal his secrets and when to reveal them. That's a good trait.

About me!

Hi guys! I'm Giitanjali from India. My name sounds weird, and if you live outside of India, don't even try to pronounce it. In hindi, it means a tribute of songs. And it is also the title of aa Noble prize winning compilation of poems by Rabridranath Tagore.
I have a passion for books, I can probably finish more number of episodes of any TV series in one night than the number of breaths you take while sleeping. My area generally is YA, but I can read *almost* anything. From adventurous mysteries to cheesy contemporaries, You tell me, I read it.

Also, my beautiful friend Sheelalipi (her blog: http://slicedrhetoric.blogspot.in) will sometimes co author stuff with me, and she is great. Go follow her!

I have 2 other blogs (because I have nothing better to do) on which i review books and write my original poems. here you go: http://thelilreaderandwriter.blogspot.in/ and: https://thenerdyself.wordpress.com/

I'll be posting as much as possible, so bear with me. Welcome a ride with a lot of fun book tags, reviews, giveaways, author interviews, TV series cover ups and more!

Retribution of Mara Dyer #3 of the Mara Dyer Trilogy by Michelle Hodkin (No Spoilers guys) Review

Mara Dyer wants to believe there’s more to the lies she’s been told.

She doesn’t stop to think about where her quest for the truth might lead.
She should.

She never had to imagine how far she would go for vengeance.
She will now.

Loyalties are betrayed, guilt and innocence tangle, and fate and chance collide in this shocking conclusion to Mara Dyer’s story.

Retribution has arrived. (synopsis from Goodreads)

OH MY GOD. OH MY FREAKING GOD. (Original Rating: 4.75 stars)

I have never, EVER read a book so true to its title. NEVER.

Michelle Hodkin has done it again. Her books are always a string of crazy gasps and ooohhs and aaahs and high pitched wailing of “SHIT” or, well, you get the idea.

In this book, Get ready for more of it.

The book starts with Mara waking up in a hospital room (No surprises there) and she knows she is in Horizons. The crazy mental facility that (may or not have) blown up. Because of her. She is being experimented at, tortured, and basically she is convinced she is crazy. And that she killed Noah.

Noah is a mystery that keeps hanging in the book and makes you go through a lot of trauma. Loads of it. But, Mara’s awesomeness and lethalness makes you forget about the gap that so evidently is wide. She is not an avenging angel or Damsel in distress at any point in the book. She is neither a hero, nor a villian. She is Mara. And the name is enough.

Mara most definitely took the highlight in the book and did not let any character overpower her at any moment. She went through a LOT of bullshit, and she made people go through a lot of bullshit. Her character grew out strong and completely perfect for the ending Hodkin gave the book.

This book touches a lot of elements that I till now knew to be alien to Hodkin. But she surprises you in every aspect. One such element that was missing in the last 2 books was the casual relation between the supporting members of the book and the protagonists. In this book, we see a very interesting yet well calculated friendship between Mara Dyer, Jamie, Stella and Her brother. They all support each other in the worst of times and understand each others’ predicaments. They know where one lacks and the other excels, and that is how they plan each and every agenda they have in mind.

All the characters basically rise from the ashes and the deep and dark secrets that unveil in this book are too much too stomach, yet delightfully beautiful to imagine. As we had seen in the Evolution of Mara Dyer, we get excepts from her Mara’s genetic memory as they had happened with her Indian Grandmother in the 40s and 50s (I’m guessing), and they are most definitely the scariest and the best parts of the book. They make you go all, “OH HELL NO”

and “UH HUHHHH?”. Read it. You’ll know.

This one is a real page turner. And i don’t know what you’re waiting for. Just go grab this book, and you’ll fly through it. And don’t worry, Noah is alive.

And as for awards *DRUMROLL*

DUM DUM DUM

Best Side Kick- Jamie!

Why? He was funny at the right times, serious at the right times. He came out to be a balanced character, which is something I love in books like this. And of course, his powers were SUPER cool.

Best Negative role- (Nope. Its not Deborah Kells. She was psycho) Jude and (…Spoiler..)

Why? Nasty use of power and science. And nasty lying.

Best oomph worthy character- Its Noah.

Can’t help is guys. I just can’t. The lilting British accent..

Best Character- MARA DYER

Why? LOVED her. Big time. This book is very Mara centred as it should have been. And she used the attention right.
